Orthodontic treatments for a straighter smile

How would you improve the look of your smile? Perhaps you’d like to straighten twisted or crooked teeth, close spaces, or improve your overall ability to eat. Today, an increasing number of adult patients seek a suitable tooth straightening treatment in order to help improve the appearance of their teeth.
Why choose to have braces
Many people have missed orthodontic treatment in childhood or have found that any straightening carried out in childhood has relapsed over time. Others have been put off in the past by metal braces and the potential for significant disruption to their daily life. If this sounds like you, then you’ll be pleased to learn that fixed metal braces are no longer the only way to gain a beautifully straight, healthy smile.
With modern orthodontics, there are many exciting treatments, often more comfortable, fast working, convenient, and cost-effective than you might think. At Park House Dental Health, we offer a range of dental treatments including Invisalign treatment and fixed braces.

Types of braces we offer

Fixed braces:
However complex your dental issues are, fixed braces are the most popular, effective, and safe way to move your teeth, helping to improve the appearance, function and general health of your mouth. Usually, we see fixed braces in younger patients. This is because bite and misalignment issues are first detected (and normally treated) in childhood. When used early, braces are very effective and have a high success rate.
- To move several teeth effectively and precisely.
- Suitable for mild to complex corrections.
If you are keen to have fixed braces but would prefer a more discreet finish, lingual braces can be attached to the inside surfaces of your teeth so that they are less visible.
Removable braces:
In a removable brace, a plastic arch sits in the top of the mouth. Wires are attached to the brace, as required, and hold onto the teeth. The plastic arch expands slowly overtime gently pushing teeth into their new positions.
- Generally shorter treatment times, as they deal with milder issues.
- Normally used on the top teeth.
Removable braces must be worn for as long as possible during the day. You should only remove them for short periods of time- for example, when cleaning your teeth, eating, or for leisure activities.
Clear aligners:
Invisalign treatment works by gradually moving your teeth using a series of aligners, each worn for one to two weeks. Each set of aligners moves your teeth closer to their desired position. Treatment duration varies from 7 weeks to 24 months, depending on your specific needs.
- Comfortable and removable to fit in with your lifestyle
- Virtually invisible for aesthetic appeal
With Invisalign aligners, you can achieve your dream smile without metal wires or brackets, and you don’t need to change your diet or lifestyle for effective treatment.

The orthodontic treatment process
Before treatment:
- Teeth are thoroughly checked for any decay and/or gum problems (x-rays, photos, and impressions will all be used).
- Tooth extraction (if required) will be performed prior to the fitting of your brace.
During treatment:
- Regular monthly or bi-monthly appointments are required to allow for checks and adjustments on your brace.
- Alternative accessories (face masks, headgear, biteplates) may be required. Always follow instructions to ensure that treatment continues well.
- Remember to look after your teeth really well during any orthodontic treatment. With fixed braces, the risk of tooth decay is increased.
- Be aware of your diet- avoiding sweets and sugary drinks, which could damage your teeth.
- Hard foods can also damage the brackets and wires.
- At times, your brace may feel a little uncomfortable. This is quite normal, and standard painkillers should help. Sticking with a softer diet for a few days can also help you to feel more comfortable.
- If you find that metal wires and brackets rub on the inside of your mouth dental wax can be provided.
After treatment:
- Every patient is different; however, the average treatment time for fixed braces is between 2 and 3 years.
- Average treatment time for removable braces is generally less (around 1 year).
- With fixed braces, you will attend a de-banding appointment so that they can be removed. Your teeth will also be cleaned and polished.
- You will need to wear a retainer for a specified period of time in order to prevent your teeth from relapsing. This can be a removable appliance of a fixed lingual brace, depending on your requirements and personal situation.

FAQs
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Every patient is different, and we can give you a personalised treatment plan when we see you for your consultation. However, as a rough guide, the average treatment time for fixed braces is between 2 and 3 years. The average treatment time for removable braces is generally less (around 1 year). The average time for clear aligners can be from 9 to 18 months.
Is orthodontic treatment painful?
While the movement of teeth might sound uncomfortable, orthodontic treatment is rarely described as truly painful. Most patients experience a feeling of pressure or mild soreness after their braces are first placed or after switching to a new set of aligners. This discomfort is a sign that your teeth are moving and typically lasts for only a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers, like ibuprofen or paracetamol, are usually sufficient to manage this temporary tenderness. Modern orthodontic technology, including the gentle forces used by clear aligners, is specifically designed to maximise comfort and make the journey to a straighter smile as pleasant as possible.
What is a retainer and why is it important?
A retainer is a custom-made orthodontic appliance worn after your active treatment (with braces or aligners) is complete, and it is arguably the most important part of the entire process. Its purpose is to “retain” your teeth in their newly straightened positions. Without a retainer, your teeth will inevitably try to shift back to their original position, a natural process called relapse. Retainers can be fixed (a thin wire bonded to the back of the teeth) or removable (clear plastic or wire). Your orthodontist will prescribe a specific retainer regimen, and consistent use is non-negotiable for preserving the beautiful, straight smile you worked so hard to achieve.
How do I clean my teeth with braces on?
Maintaining excellent oral hygiene with traditional braces requires a little extra effort but is crucial for preventing cavities and gum problems. You should brush after every meal using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Pay special attention to cleaning above and below the brackets. You will also need to floss daily using specialised tools, like floss threaders or interdental brushes, to clean between the wires and underneath the archwire. A water flosser can also be a helpful addition to flush out trapped food debris. Our orthodontist or hygienist will demonstrate the proper techniques to ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy throughout your treatment.
Is there an age limit for orthodontic treatment?
There is no age limit for starting orthodontic treatment. As long as your teeth and gums are healthy, you can successfully have your teeth straightened at any point in your life. In fact, an increasing number of adults are seeking treatment today, often preferring the discreet options like clear aligners. The biological process of moving teeth is the same whether you are a teenager or an adult. While adult treatment may sometimes take slightly longer due to denser bone structure, modern orthodontics offers fantastic results for individuals of all ages who desire a healthier, straighter, and more confident smile.
